Ayn Rand's Influence on the Tea Party

The celebration of the individual is seeing a resurgence in American politics. But is freedom to earn one's living the same as the freedom to emasculate government?

Ayn Rand has a large and growing influence on American politics. Speaking at an event in her honor, Congressman Paul Ryan said, "The reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand."
A few weeks ago, Maureen Fiedler, the producer of the weekly radio show, Interfaith Voices, asked me to participate in a debate with Onkar Ghate, a senior fellow at the Ayn Rand Institute. I eagerly accepted. I wanted to hear how a follower of Rand would defend proposals to cut Medicare, Medicaid, and food stamps while exempting the wealthy from paying their fair share.     
In one sense there was agreement. Maureen, a Sister of Loretto, argued that Republican budget proposals turned their back on Christ's admonition to care for "the least among us," the hungry, the sick, the homeless. Ghate did not dispute that. Rand, he said, was an atheist who did not believe in government efforts to help those in need.

Oil limits, recession, and bumping against the growth ceiling

The issues we are confronted with today seem to be a subset of the issues foretold in the book Limits to Growth back in 1972. At some point, the economy cannot continue to grow as rapidly as it did in the past. It appears to me that the most immediate limit we are hitting today is inadequate low-priced oil, but there are other limits lurking not far away–inadequate fresh water and excessive pollution, for example. When the economy cannot grow as fast, or actually starts declining, recession sets in. Governments start having debt problems. Financial markets start behaving strangely.
This issue is a difficult one to talk about, because there really is no good solution. I have talked to a couple of groups recently (one a church group; one a peak oil group), about this issue. Artist’s statement:

I am influenced by American and European Folk Art and things like really old Mickey Mouse cartoons, they are kind of dark and the references are all out of date and that makes them better in a way.  They are enigmatic, you can’t really put your finger on why you love them so much.  I think there is something a little sinister about my work that comes through and that is what people respond to.  I think it can be healthy for art to contradict itself somehow, to be honest, to contain duplicity.

This series pays homage to the performers that provided American music with a truly unique identity. Those early, raw recordings of Delta Blues laid the foundations for multiple genres that followed. My approach to the work was akin to a blues song; simple, honest and direct. Art direction by John Sanford for Muse magazine.
